Divisional Playoffs - Home Teams Ruin Lives
2009-02-19
California Eagles v. Tucson Heat
An expansion team vs. an old-timey power, can the student beat the teacher? Not today, where the grit of the experienced Eagles team overcame the fresh ideas coming out of the desert of Arizona. The Heat got off to a great start, exposing the Eagles defense with a deft mixture of passing and rushing and opportunistic defense. Where a lesser team might have given up down 17-0 the Eagles dug deep and clawed back and showed off their own balanced offense. Ultimately the Eagles proved to be better at both running the ball and passing. They amassed an impressive 25 first downs most of which came in the 2nd half. The only stat that really matters is the final score, and the Eagles earned their trip to the Conference finals winning 31-30.
The Heat had an excellent sophomore season and were only a play or two away from their second upset of the postseason after beating Madison in the Wildcard Round. The Eagl ... Read More
Wild And Wacky Finish
2009-02-07
With a year unlike any other in VFF history, the finish was quite sure to be unlike any we'd seen before in VFF history too. Sure enough, it was. Week 16 was a wild and crazy one, with the top of the West still available to four different teams, while five more fought for the bottom berths in each conference, and Atlanta, BC and Hamilton dueled it out across the continent to determine seeding. If you weren't cheering for the Stonewall, you had a reason to watch and nobody but nobody went home bored. Disappointed maybe, but not bored.
We start in Oklahoma, with a massive tilt between the Oil Barons and Norse Stars, first place in both divisions on the line. Jamie Small had a rough game last week against Madison, and the Stars needed him to step it up for this one. But Ted Robinson picked him off less then five minutes in, returning the pick 55 yards for the score and setting the tone for the game, as Small would be intercepted three more t ... Read More
Prediction Thread Week 14
2009-01-24
This season my skill at predicting results has been not exactly successful. This week however I managed to surpass myself correctly picking the winner in 6 or the matches played. Obviously looking the records and strengths of each side isn’t working and with just 2 regular season weeks to go I’ve decided to try something new. With this in mind my new idea is to choose the victor by the relative strengths of their nicknames. As a bit of a dry run I’ve applied this logic to this week and see how I did.
Heat @ Dragons
Well it depends on how strong a heat doesn’t it. A pleasant summer’s day isn’t scary at all and a Dragon is a large fierce reptile. However I’m going for the Heat as if you were stranded in the desert it’s nasty as Dragons are fictional and don’t exist

Week 12 – The Playoff Picture clears, but it’s still to dark to see.

Tucson 41 Hawaii 21
Tucson gets to .500 with the win against the 1-11 Surprise. The Surprise have struggled on offence all year, but this time it was their defense that failed them. Tucson QB Joseph Sunday came out and managed the game for the Heat, and let RBs Sloan and Stone run all over Hawaii. QB Javier Zuccaro is trying to restart his career, and put in a solid if unspectacular game. The Heat currently hold the 5th seed in the Western conference.
Minneapolis 13 Madison 12
This game pitted two of the VFF’s most potent offences against each other. The result of one TD being scored surprised everyone. The Mad Dogs held Minneapolis QB Jamie Small to his worse game of the year (an abysmal 43.8 qb rating) but Madison couldn’t get their red zone offence rolling, settling for 4 Field Goals. The win moves the Norse Stars into sole possession of the division lead, and 2nd seed in the West.
